Education is a central part of our mission. The IoE offers undergraduate students a major in Environmental Science and a minor in Environmental Systems and Society. We also offer the "Leaders in Sustainability" multidisciplinary emphasis for graduate students. Our programs include a broad array of courses that draw upon UCLA's vast intellectual resources from one of the most talented and accomplished faculty in the world.
The undergraduate major in Environmental Science is an innovative dual-component program that offers both breadth and depth. The first component, the
Environmental Science Major, includes a solid foundation of natural sciences and upper division coursework that focuses on understanding environmental issues across earth, atmospheric, life and social sciences. The second component, a Minor, provides in-depth knowledge in one of eight environmental science areas, each associated with a particular UCLA department.
The undergraduate minor in Environmental Systems and Society is a multi-disciplinary program that aims to broaden students' understanding of environmental science and how the decisions we make affect the environment around us.
The Leaders in Sustainability graduate emphas is aimed at graduate students (masters and doctoral) who will become decision-makers in various types of organizations (businesses, non-profits, governmental, etc.) and who will have to address the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental and social.
Throughout its programs and courses, the IoE enhances student training by presenting environmental issues within a broad yet integrated framework.Classroom activities are enhanced by student contact with the Institute's research programs, includingfieldwork at
remote facilities such as the Stunt Ranch Natural Reserve inthe Santa Monica Mountains, and aboard the Sea World UCLA research vessel on Santa Monica Bay.
