"We are establishing the Coastal Center to coordinate all research, educational, and outreach activities conducted by the IoE that involve coastal and ocean environmental and management Issues."

Professor Richard Turco, IoE Director, July 1, 2002

Research

The Coastal Center is currently conducting more than a half-million
dollars of funded research. The major research areas encompassed by this center include: modeling of physical and ecosystem processes; water and sediment quality; human impacts on
coral reefs and temperate rocky reefs
(Reef Check); larval recruitmant and dispersal; human impacts and natural ecology of the intertidal zone and of coastal wetlands; and interactions with the watershed and the atmo-

phere. A particular emphasis will be placed on observational studies using
the facilities associated with this center.

Education

The educational activities of the Coastal Center include participation in lower division undergraduate courses and teaching upper
division courses in Physical, Chemical, and Biological

Oceanography. Future plans include a Masters Degree and special summer courses for mid-career US and foreign professionals in Integrated Coastal Management.

Outreach

Coastal Center outreach efforts include:
* The Cruising Classroom for Grades 4-12 and high school and university classes on board the Sea World UCLA
*Ocean Globe marine research and outdoor environmental education program for secondary education students
*Reef Check California and International training programs

Facilities

Coastal Center facilities include:
*Sea World UCLA, 64 foot steel-hull research vessel capable of 9 knots, equipped with an A-frame winches and oceanographic equipment, dry lab, scuba support, space for 18 passengers and a range of 1000 miles.
*Two 18 ft. skiffs and one 26ft. inboard smaller boats.
*The Santa Monica Bay Observatory, consisting of an instrumented buoy in Santa Monica Bay, a shore station on the Santa Monica Pier, and related web sites to provide access to the data.
*A mobile instrumented van for watershed and wetland data collection.
