Overview
The Center for Tropical Research (CTR) currently has over 15,000 North American bird samples to screen for avian influenza virus (AIV). Approximately 15,000 more are expected by the end of 2007. Over 290 species of birds have been sampled from the U. S. and three Central American countries.
This abundance of samples is due primarily to the efforts of CTR’s collaborators: the Landbird Monitoring Network of the Americas (LaMNA) coordinated by the U.S. Forest Service Redwood Sciences Laboratory.
IBP coordinates four land bird monitoring networks: Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) network, Monitoreo de Sobrevivencia Invernal (MoSI) (Monitoring Overwintering Survival) network, Monitoring Avian Winter Survival (MAWS) network, and Molt Migration Stopover (MoMS). In total, IBP manages more than 450 banding stations in the U.S. and over 80 in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. These networks survey birds at their breeding and overwintering grounds.
