Education for Sustainable Living Program

The Education for Sustainable Living Program is a student-initiated, student-led organization that connects students to the world of sustainability.

Education for Sustainable Living Program - Los Angeles

Education comes in many forms throughout the program. The Documentary Series connects students with the visual images of topics in sustainability. The Lecture Series brings guest speakers from UCLA and across the country to speak on specialized subjects including food systems, green business, organic gardens, sustainable living, and the green economy, as well as sustainability projects across Los Angeles. The Action Research Teams open up the world of action-oriented research to UCLA students. Last year’s projects focused on recycling within the residence halls, the Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology, and seven other UCLA campus buildings.

The Education for Sustainable Living Program is part of the California Student Sustainability Coalition, a statewide program centered on the education and promotion of sustainability. ESLP has been running at UCLA for four years, UCLA being one of the first campuses to start the program in 2004. Speakers in past years have included Andy Lipkis of TreePeople, Jules Dervaes of Path to Freedom, and Scott Sherman of the Transformative Action Institute.

2009-2010 Academic Year

2008-2009 Academic Year: In an effort to educate as many students as possible about the issues of sustainability, the lecture series will be held in the fall. Running the lecture series during the fall will give students the opportunity to jump right into sustainability at the start of the school year and then turn their empowered passion into action through the Action Research Teams which will follow in the Winter and Spring. The Documentary Series will be extended into a yearlong event with multiple showings each quarter, giving all students the opportunity to view amazing movies and continue furthering their knowledge of world issues and sustainability throughout the academic year.

For the 2007-2008 academic year, ESLP was recorded by BruinCast and posted for the public to view, simultaneously extending education for the public. All ten lecturers can be viewed online here.
